Trying to choose a mattress size?
Having good quality sleep is important to your wellbeing. Sleep plays a vital role in restoring and healing the body, so your health takes a hit when you aren’t sleeping well.
If you’re suffering from sleep problems or feeling tired during the day it’s important to assess the quality of the mattress you’re sleeping on.
What to consider when choosing a mattress size
There is no point struggling with a mattress that is too old or not suited to what you need. One of the key questions you need to ask is: does my mattress fit my life?
Mattress size plays a key role in getting good quality sleep and there are three key considerations when thinking about size:
- How many people will be sleeping with you?
- What is the size of the person who will be sharing it with you?
- Do you have kids who like to spend time in bed with you?
Your height and weight will determine what size is best for you to make sure that nobody feels cramped when they sleep. As a general rule, to get the best sleep a couple needs to have at least a Queen mattress. However, if one of you is particularly tall or broad, a larger mattress such as a King or above is preferable.
Remember that a Super King is the width of two Single mattresses together. So if you’re a couple sleeping in anything smaller than a Super King, you’re each sleeping in a smaller space than a child on a single bed. So go as big as you can in the space you have!

Mattress sizes for kids:
Children's needs change as they grow – and often their bed size needs to change as well. Most children start out on a single mattress, but as they grow you may prefer to upsize to a King single, Long single or Double mattress. You should replace mattresses every 10 years, so if you buy a single for your toddler's first big kids bed, you'll probably want to move up to a bed with more space for their next phase.
Pop-up and trundler beds are also a good option for kids, with a King single for your child to sleep in and a spare bed you can roll out from underneath the main bed whenever you need. The two can even be pushed together to create more sleep surface for those gangly teens.
Making the right choice for you:
No matter who is going to sleep with you, investing in the right sized mattress is one of the most important things to get right. Size is a key determiner of the quality of the sleep you’ll have. So don’t rush into picking a certain size mattress because that’s what you’ve always had. Queen mattresses are by far the most popular option in New Zealand and tend to fit well in older style houses, but if you have more space in your room - and most new builds do - absolutely consider sizing up.
